Last night at petrolhead Nirvana meet at Ace Cafe, a Mustang owning friend who has a Tesla as a daily driver let me have a quick go.... It was really very interesting..

My experience of electric cars is limited to my neighbours hybrid Lexus 300, and the odd trip in a Prius minicab.. this was something different.

1. It's a proper quality built car, certainly up there with Merc and BMW from the feel and finish of it.
2. It's loaded with tech, like constant 3g internet, so you speak a song to the dashboard and it'll search and play it.
3. It's fast !!!! properly fast.. This was the standard Model S 85D, so only had the equivalent of 400 odd BHP, but it flew, 0 - 60 is 4.2 sec, and qtr mile is 12.5 secs... so quick !!!! (the P85D is 0 - 60 of 2.8 secs ... ) and it felt it. We were loaded 4 people up and still being thrown back in out seats when I booted it... . and all silently !!!
4. It drives very nicely, steering is nice, handles very well, and it's 4 wheel drive.
5. It'll do 300 miles on a charge..

The future is electric from what i've seen... Only I issue I could see from me using one, is a long drive, then having to park somewhere I couldn't charge it like a car park, and running out of battery.. Apart from that I'd have one !!

They are starting to get more popular, i see on average 2 per week now, very nice looking cars. My friend works at Continental and they did a press event last year, taking about 10 cars through the curvey roads in the South of France for a few days.
They had 2 Tesla's, a Z06 Corvette, BMW M4 and a few others. He was telling me the Tesla had no problem keeping up with the Corvette, which is pretty mad as it's classed as a family / executive car.

Will be interesting to see how popular the model 3 is, should be about half the price of the model s. Once the big manufacturers start to see it as serious competition, hopefully they'll start to jump in on the game and bring down our reliance on fossil fuels. Don't think petrol stations will disappear, there will still be reasonable % of people who like and will want petrol / diesel. Will be good for the people who aren't bothered about cars (seems to be more these days) and the not mechanically inclined, to switch over to electric models, and save the fuel for us enthusiasts

I read between the lines of one of Elon Musks recent interview that his gigafactory isn't just being built for Tesla and home battery packs, that he would also happily be the supplier of battery packs and electric drivetrains to other car manufacturers. They've already supplied powertrains on a low level to a few manufactures, so perhaps that will help kick start the electric conversion of future cars, making it easier for the manufacturers as they can order in the electronic part of things. Interesting times ahead for sure.

(after seeing a Tesla up close at Ace Cafe, i'd have one too for the daily commute Could go almost 3 weeks with out a charge )

Ye they're not cheap. Even the used ones are £45k+ Not sure how long the batteries last, i doubt after 5 years of use they would get the full range any longer. Don't think Tesla publish the prices of a replacement battery pack?

Not been in one yet, but my company's parent company in Switzerland have at least one for ferrying around VIP's.

I don't work for that division but i am sure they have something to do with the batteries.

There are two young ladies who go down the ace cafe sometimes and have a couple they rent out, i was seriously impressed with the look and interior and it was nice to ask people what they are like to live with as daily drivers, £80k is a lot of money but consider what you would put in fuel in something similar, a nice Jag or Aston and the figure doesnt look so shocking, bear in mind you have no engine to service, an electric motor, no gearbox to go wrong, any modifications to the cars software for anything are downloaded and installed automaticly so its always 100% efficient, i would buy one if i had the money or could justify its use somehow

As you may have heard, the Tesla model 3 launched in the hours of this morning.

Available late next year and less than half the price of the model s. I was expecting it to be like a prius, or some silly futuristic design, but they've pretty much nailed it. Model S for the long journeys, Model 3 for daily use. They also made $115 million overnight in deposits. Not bad.

Well, just read they've surpassed 250,000 deposits. Not too shabby. Average price (base model is $35k but with extra's etc.) is estimated at $42k. $10.5 billion potential revenue that works out to. Think it's safe to say we know where the future is.

This should really step up the game for manufacturers - not only is it a potential loss to their sales but in another way, it's a new market segment that they can tap into. Interesting times ahead.
