Not looked at mine yet, but it sounds pretty awful to be honest, anyone got one? Preferably something more than a 3:1 ratio, and has torque arm mountings/anti rollbar. Currently have a 10bolt posi with a 3.3:1 ratio. Located in Derby, but will travel. Thanks, Carl. |

Why not rebuild it ? I´m doing mine at the moment swapping the 2.70 gears for 3.23, I´ve had to buy and borrow tools and the car is arse up in the garden. I´m sure I can do it if I take my time and read all I can about it. It´s all new parts from Rockauto and Summit, buying used can get you the same grief again. To go from 2.70 to 3.23 I had to get a 3 carrier, I´ve got all new bearings even the outer axle ones. I´ve not started yet as there are still parts underway from Summit. I´ll need to examine my shafts very closely as the splines do seem to be marked. It´s not a cheap job but a recon axle is more. I'd get it rebuilt if the rest of it is OK and the posi works.... Southern Axles in Watford did my gear change and rebuild. |

I have a book, Differentials, by Randy Lyman of Randy´s Ring & Pinion. He reckons most types of posi are not working after 50000miles. I have a PowerTrax in mine, had it since they first came out, marvelous piece of kit. This is for a 1986 7.5 axle, http://www.summitracing.com/dom/parts/p ... /overview/ |

Still not actually took it apart yet to see, just awaiting on a torque arm bush to come, fit that then see if its still noises. If so will rip the rear cover off and check for any damage, if i cant spot anything too bad will rebuild it. Just be nice to rip old one off and replace with another, get it over and do with in half a day kinda thing. |

This is how far I´ve got with mine, axle out, stripped and painted. Waiting for gear marking compound and new brake line, the flare nuts at the backing plates were rounded off.....   New ring gear on new series 3 carrier.  This was a bugger to get out, you need a man sized slide hammer.

I do have a 3.23 ring and pinion from a 4th gen which should go on a 3rd gen carrier, I also have a posi carrier but you'd need a spacer ring to fit the gear. Also as it is a 4th gen carrier the spline count would be wrong (28 over 26) but don't quote me on it. 3rdGenmalc: Have fun with the pinion bearing and shim, what a nightmare unless you have a spare bearing or few and/or a hydraulic press and bearing puller thingy. I rebuilt my 4th gen with a 3.42 and had to change the shim behind the pinion bearing 3 times to get the correct depth as measuring it without the proper tool ($$$$) is not feasible. |

It´s been a nightmare, my PowerTrax would not fit into the 3 carrier.....although it´s listed for a 3.  So I had to buy another ring & pinion for the 2 carrier, 3.42 being the best shot. I´m now back to square one after setting up the 3.23 to perfection. The 3.42s are now in with the PowerTrax.

Tip, remove the old pinion bearings and grind them out so they slip back onto the pinion, you can then use them to get your setup right before pressing on the new bearings. I bought a bearing removal tool, which I found out could install as well.......bust it on the pinion bearing first time. I have access to a press at the tyre dealer in town, he´s a car nut too. |

I did a bit of reading about changing gears, but decided it was really way over my head, so got a pro do mine. Well done for tackling it yourself... |
