Mine just packed up..

I have a 2nd gen camaro.. and my alternator just gave up (61 amp) it's a v belt and I'm pretty sure they are almost all the same up to 1981 .. possibly even newer.

Does anyone have one for sale or know what might fit from a UK car? I work in a motor factors but Really struggling to find a UK equivalent. . Or one I can modify to fit.. Prefer higher amps than 61a standard .

Is there anything from a normal car I can use? .. just wanted one pretty quick without extortionate shipping charges. . I can parts through my work at cost .. i just don't know an equivalent. Thanks

I have used Vauxhall alternators in the past, very similar appearance to original alternators, easy to fit and if from something like a Senator with lots of accessories, good output. I know they are all older cars now and not many left in the yards but they are on Ebay. V belt compliant too! HTH

Martin .. just an update .. great advice.. I had a new old stock vauxhall one in work.. had to grind some lugs off it but even the original spacer bracket worked a treat .. didn't even need washers to space it. My only other issue is that the old alternator had a main feed to charge the battery(as does the new one) then 2 spade connectors .. One thick, pink wire. One black wire. The alternator I put on has one spade (plus) out ... I tried putting that to the thick pink spade but it's draining my battery all the time .. I put it to the thin black (I tested this with a multimeter 1st and it's turns to plus 12v when ignition is on) and this seems to charge no problem. .. does this sound right? Hope someone can shed some light on this..

Hi Andy, that's great news, not sure about the wiring you have there, I just wire up so it works, seems you have done it this way too! FWIW, the 12v exciter wire must go through a bulb (usually the red charge light on the dash) or the engine will keep running when you turn it off, and the alternator can be killed. Glad it worked out for you and I appreciate the feedback, I often give advice on other forums and never hear a peep back from the OP so it's nice to get some feedback.

Hi Martin .. It was great for 10 miles haha.. Then it stopped charging (I didn't have it through a bulb) I had it checked by a re conditioner company .. They told me it works fine... so ... why has it suddenly stopped charging ? With no wires attached but spinning with engine .. It isn't charging ... With a trigger wire attached is doesn't charge either .. im stumped .. especially when I have had it tested and it works fine on the bench. :( any ideas ??

Ooer, doesn't sound good now. As I said, you must run the exciter wire through a bulb or you can kill the alternator. IIRC, it's the diode packs that die, can usually be replaced to revive the patient. You won't get any output even with the engine running unless you have the main power (output) connected AND the exciter connected. Give that a try and report back. I'm not an electrician though!
