I flatted the paint down on the trunklid today to remove any orange peel & to get it ready for the Z/28 stripes. I first flatted it with 600 grit wet & dry with some soap & water, followed by 1500 & then 2000 wet & dry. I used a bar of soap as opposed to Fairy liquid or some other such brand, as it doesn't harm the paint in any way, whereas washing up liquid does.
Although it's flatted down, once completed you're able to see a slight sheen to the paint.
The paint was then cut back using an electric polisher & G3 Farecla cutting paste to bring up a good shine. Here's a couple of pics of the finished shine prior to using a glaze to finish it. The glaze will be used once the stripes are painted, flatted & cut back.
I then started to mask out the Z/28 stripes as per an original build manual
Once masked the paint was flatted using a grey Scotchbrite pad to key the paint ready for the stripes to be applied.
Once the panel was ready it was degreased with a pre paint degreaser & tacked off with a tack rag.The stripes were then painted with black 2K paint.
.
Once dry the stripes were unmasked
The next stage tomorrow is to wet flat the stripes with 1500 & 2000 wet & dry & then to cut them back with Farecla G3 followed by the glaze.
In case you're wondering why the stripes are cut short & don't go over the edge of the trunk lid down to the rear panel, it's just that with a factory rear spoiler fitted, the factory only painted the stripe until it stopped under the spoiler, not over the edge of the trunk. Dealers would paint the stripes onto the edge of the trunklid as well as the spoiler.
I deliberately painted the stripes in solid black as opposed to a basecoat black & clear lacquer over the whole trunk lid, as from the factory they wouldn't have clear lacquered the whole trunk & you would be able to feel the edge of the stripes, rather than have them smooth & buried beneath lacquer. Yep, you'll be able to feel mine
. Most Z/28's when painted during a restoration have the stripes parallel to each other. This was not the case from the factory, as they tapered narrower to the rear of the trunklid by almost 1/4". Guess which way I did it??
