This is absolutely the sort of thing I'd love to do to my own car.
Really nice to see. :)

Thanks guys for the comments, after blasting I managed to get a few of the repairs done which showed up after shot blasting. More importantly I got the pillar repairs done...

Took a bit of time and numerous trial fittings of the cowl over the top to ensure everything was ok, but pretty happy with the end results. Stiffened everything up a treat too!

Next was the drivers floor pan. I used a patch piece but the floor had rotted out further up so needed to get creative with the steel plate again!

Image

Image

Image

When I'd done all the metalwork I even managed to get a squirt of primer on.

Image

Next I got the corners repaired...

Image

Image

I used KBS rustseal to seal the inner corners from water...

Image

The water had got into the drivers side corner and it was considerably worse, nothing that couldn't be repaired though...

The finished product...

About this time I picked up a set of Z28 wheels which are still awaiting refurb! Will update more soon, hope everyone is enjoying this superspeed build

Next was to pull the front subframe out...

A selection of wasted bolts...

Image

The original Chevy bushings...

Image

The two rear holes were sound...

Image

Image

The two front ones on the other hand needed some attention...

Image

Image

I also had a delivery from the postman...

Image

I sealed all the cowl area with Rustseal which came up a treat...

Image

Then I got to welding up the cowl panel, I think I might have gone a bit mad with the plug welds! I had to check that the glass still fit so laid that in before I started to weld...

Image

I had my dad helping out with a load of the prep work, here he is stripping off the factory black from the repo corner panels...

Image

Nice and shiny, ready for a skim of filler to take out any low spots...

Image

Image

Then I painted the corners and cowl with self etch primer and 2 pk grey as per the rest of the car...

Image

Removed the masking for finished product...

Image

Image

Image

The VIN plate is now back on the car (As opposed to rattling round in my toolbox!)...

Image

Will post more later - still plenty to come!

Hahahaha who ever owned your car, must of been the same owner that had my Capri too! Shocked me went i started to restore that car and i found very similar things to you, although no chicken wire, just cut up thinners tin instead.

Never actually seen one with that front end, i quite like it!
Work looks like its progressing, keep up the good work!

Just gone through all your pages here and its nice to know that there was a slightly more rotten Camaro out there than mine
I've gone through almost the exact same pain and process on my 69 so I really appreciate seeing someone else's project in the same vein.
That's a cracking good job you're doing there (guess it must be finished now?) and there is no better satisfaction that knowing its been done RIGHT and proper.

Great thread - More updates please

Ask and you shall receive! Hi everyone, I've been pretty rubbish at supporting this forum and for that I apologize, I promise to make more of an effort this year! There has been plenty of progress which I am yet to post, but I'll build up this thread a little at a time to where I am now, to start with I'll take you back to July 2011...

I bought a new repair panel to help tackle the damage around the rear window...

Image

Cutting this panel out wasn't too much trouble but did require some persuading! Underneath the metal was solid except for some minor surface rust which was rubbed down...

Image

Again I sealed the lot with two coats just to be on the safe side...

Image

The new panel sat in a treat, I had to mock everything up to be sure I was happy, but no surprises so I proceeded to weld...

Image

I also tackled the rear window base where the sail panel comes round, again this was rotten, so I cut some pieces to repair these areas...

Image

With a little tweaking here and there I tacked the new piece in place...

Image

How it looked after I'd welded it up, I did tidy it up afterwards...

Image

I then moved onto the other rear window repair, left plenty of green on it so I could trim back accordingly to the new quarter...

Image

And the finished product...

Image

Got the other side tidied up too...

Image

So then I decided to seam seal the arches and prep for rust-sealing, got both sides sealed ready for painting...

Image

A view from the back of the new panel, this truly saved me so much repair work, and I found the fit pretty awesome too. Also swapped the trunk-bracket-rod-bar-holder thingy (the bit in middle) over...

Image

Following that I couldn't resist a quick mock up...

Image

More to come...

Top stuff. The work you've put in is quite something.
Wish I had the welding skills

(I've seen the finished paint pics already and it's a beauty !!!)

The inner areas of the rear quarters got painted with two coats of KBS rust sealer, it's well hidden but should give me extra peace of mind!

Image

Image

Next I started on the quarters, I started at the door jamb with clamps and put 4 welds in to secure the panel against the inner frame, then worked back and put 2 welds in the window lip. In total I put 6 well spread welds in over the front half of each wing...

Image

By only putting 6 key welds in, it secured the front half of the wing which was spot on anyway, but left the rear half with enough flex to setup the rear end from the base of the rear window back. I got the filler panel screwed in and set the gaps to 1/4" on that, the trunk lid was laid in and that came up nice too.

I got the tail pan mocked up...

Image

Image

The basic fit was good but it needed to shift across and up to get everything to line up, which is why I've left some flex in the rear half of the quarters.
