Cheers Nige! Quite a compliment coming from yourself :)

Replied to your email, but thought i'd say hello here too. Ye it's gettin there now, spending this weekend putting it all back together, the doors are on (not aligned yet), the rad support and area around it are on too, just looking at changing the screws for new ones now. Hopefully will get the front wings on by the end of the weekend :)

Not sure about a stripe, will be vinyl if i do. was contemplating dual carbon fibre style ones, but the L88 hood is such a complicated shape, not sure how i would get around it. Maybe i will go with a single cannonball style, below.

The colour is Mercedes Signal red, was worried it was going to come out slightly burgundy but it is a nice strong red, deeper than the original colour which was coke red - quite faint in comparison.

Cheers and hope your internet is back up and running now!

Ray I just read your whole build. It's astounding work and such attention to quality. I think this is the best restored late 2nd Gen I've ever seen in the UK... Don't forget when you've finished I'll drop mine over minus trim glass and engine to see if you can do the same to it. Although I think you will find a little more rust and filler on mine... LOL!! Great job....

David ...

PS You should have had those blue aluminium Global West solid body bushings....My mistake....

Hey David,

Thanks, really appreciate those comments, hopefully it keeps up the to standard when you see it in real life :)

No worries about the bushings, i did some more reading based on our conversation and it seems that the consenus is that 1) solid metal bushings are a tough ride and aren't great for generic street use (planning on mine being a cruiser) 2) polyurethane bushings tend to squeak and distorts in shape quickly. for those reasons i think i'm gona go with standard rubber bushings to replace the rotten old ones.

I highly recommend trying to drive it down without the glass and trim, def get a few looks that way :)

Maybe a good project for next year when you get the engine tuned to perfection!

Cheers,

Ray

I think the recommendation was JUST the solid body bushings, not neccesarily the suspension. It makes very little difference to the ride quality and improves the cars general feel and structural strength.
Also you can add sub-frame connectors later, highly recommended for same reasons, which is only safe with solid body mounts.

Cheers for the advice Stu, thinking about it, as it will be a solid connection there would be minimal movement and stress in that area with the sub frame connectors in place and i guess as the connectors came with the solid bushings, i think global west knew what they were doing :)

David, if you still have em, would you mind holding on to em until we meet up sometime again, say after xmas? Won't be doing em till Jan i reckon so no rush :)

Cheers!

I was hoping to have a lot more progress by this time (*cough* driving it *cough*) but as some of you have seen i had a wiring nightmare which is almost resolved (wipers need sorting and need to figure out the horn as the wire that should be in the steering wheel is not there. Oh, i found that hazard light switch, it's a little pull switch on the right hand side just under the key lock. :geek:

I've been working on the interior trim recently, have new carpet from NPD as the carpet roll i had was just not happening so i will use that for the boot. the trim was unsurprisingly tan, a few parts, i.e the kickpanels had been painted black whilst still on the car so only parts of it were painted. the visors were black, due to dirt  , the A pillar metal trim was made black by glueing fabric ontop, classy, same as the metal trim at the front and back of the roof that holds the headliner.

Everything was strippped back of cloth, glue and paint (used nitromors with good result!) and i used SEM Colour Coat Landau black in a spray can from these guys: http://www.nwsr.co.uk . They appear not to do it in a rattle can anymore but you can buy the paint which is ready to go into a spray gun. I ran out of rattle can so im gonna try this method out in this week. I thought SEM was as dye, i think i got confused somewhere along the purchase route, it's actually a plastic + vinyl paint coating. i was really worried about it chipping and flaking, but i did a good prep job apparently (using SEM soap and plastic prep) because i did the finger nail scratch test and it's really tough. the back of the panel which i didnt prep scratched off instantly and i thought great, but then on the surface side that mattered, i really started digging my nails in to try and scratch it but nothing! very impressed. I didn't use primer as i thought it was a dye, only when needing to buy more did i read the fine print. so i'm gonna order a litre for the spray gun this week and finish up the plastic in this. pics below, but very impressed, parts look factory!! The dash i stripped back too, it had some paint drips in it, turns out it was light blue in its former life, so used Xylene thinner on a cloth and pulled back all the paint. Going to use VHT dye for this in a flat black, as i would like to dye where possible. Apparently you only truly only dye something by bathing it again and again, so i don't see how VHT will be a true dye compared to paint (would have preferred to dye the plastic than paint) so interested if anyone had any knowledge about this and has an opinion on SEM paint vs. VHT dye?

I also started retrimming the seats, got new leather and foam from NPD. Took the seats apart and wirebrushed them, they were covered in rust, then repainted and made new springs / tensioners that sit under the cushion. pics below. seat not completed because i need to get some foam... that foam that sits on the back behind the headrest isn't made so you need to either use your old ones or make new ones, so currently after some foam... anyone know where would sell this stuff?

Got the hood on today too, camera battery died though so pics next week. Next step is to do the headliner while i wait for the interior paint to arrive. i got a plastic headliner from NPD with OEM style black vinyl i just need to cut out the sunroof hole in the abs plastic. Hoping to get this done tomorrow.

Haha well noticed!!

It has gone smoother recently, actually accomplished some things that i set out. The interior is now all repaired and in black. Did the backs of the panels too (tan originally) just cos i'm anal like that. So that is all ready to go in. The headliner is now in vinyl and in place. So i can now start applying the trim. Carpet is ready to be dropped in and so are the seatbelts. Pedals are in and working. Gauge panel is almost ready to be dropped in, need to make sure it's smooth before i cover it in vinyl. Need to change the water sensor to the one that came with tha autometer gauge, then i can top up the coolant and start it :) If we have a good weekend then this may all be in place! I clearly haven't learned my lesson about getting hopes up ;)

Hi all,

Time for a few updates!

So the interior is close, we have carpets, most seatbelts and most of the dash in there. Carpets are new, dash and trim have all been stripped back to a lovely tan colour and resprayed with SEM landau black. Passenger seats has been retrimmed with new foam and leather but not installed yet. Decided to delete the sunroof, have some fun doing that :lolno: Got the electrics sorted by the look of things. it starts and the lights work which is always a good thing. Got the B&M shifter installed recently. Still need to get all the glass back in, sort the drivers seat with foam and leather, get a new headliner installed and install the rest of the trim. Getting there :)
