I've been terribly procrastinating recently meaning i've barely been in the garage last couple of weeks. I finally got down to work yesterday and managed to fit up the final piece of exhaust tubing. Got most of it welded up now, should be able to finish the welding tonight. Will have to pull the system off the car in order to finish the welds on the top of the tubing. Then need to get a few clamps on and make a couple of brackets to finish it up. Then i can finally finish up the dash which means i can call the glass guy. Whilst waiting for that i can sort out the door.

Whilst arranging the brake cable under the exhaust, i noticed the driver side you could pull and release and you could hear the brake shoes moving. On the passenger side i couldn't get the cable to pull , so i think i'll be needing to give that drum some attention.

Nightmare of a weekend. Mig welder kept creasing the feed line. Spent most of the day refeeding, unjamming etc and have about half the spool in crunched up pieces on the floor. Finally figured out the welding tip was causing resistance and causing the line to crease. Changed out tips and started working well again. Was worried that i'd need a new welder :( Finished up all the welding. Need to get some exhaust clamps now the muffler. Though annoyingly and strangely the exit pipe of the muffler can't clamp down enough to create a good mating surface to the tail pipe. The inner diameter of the muffler is 65mm and the pipe outer diameter is 63mm. But they are both flowmaster. So should be designed to fit  So i don't know what to do about that. Unfortunately i forgot to upgrade the tail pipe to stainless :( so i can't weld the tailpipe on. So that's gotta be figured out.

Started making a bracket to move the fuel pump, should be finishing that tonight.

Then onto finishing the dash. Then the door. Then can get the windows in. Not far...

Usual steps forward and back! Exhaust is now done.

Hood hinges installed, though there was a scary moment. I had them compressed and went to test fit and on one side i wasn't able to match the holes up... the G brace was in the way  I thought oh, looks like that'll all need to come apart and cut up and welded etc. So i went to the other side but couldn't access the bolt hole as it was compressed, so decompressed it and it wouldn't ft... then i realised the one i had was for the other side... so went around and with a big sigh of relief, it fit without going near the g brace. Being compressed it looked like it was in its settled position leaning back, but of course it goes forward when it closes, so that was a potentially scary moment easily dealt with.

I then found a bit of masking tape on the bottom of the rocker panel... pulled it up and found that it was left on before primering! I had put it there to remember where to add spot primer but obviously missed it when masking. So now there's a patch of bare metal, surrounded by primer. So that will need sanding, masking, primer and colour.

Then my worst fear was confirmed on the passenger door... I razor balded the door runs and you can see the dark pigment in the paint, so it will need a respray. The bottom of the door (under the swage line) is actually really good, just the top half has the issue. So i'm thinking that i will sand the top half, then do a blend on the swage line.

Also there is an area about the size of a hand on the front of the pass fender, above the swage line, that is darker in colour and the paint is a bit wavy, so seems like there was too much clear there too. I'm going to hit that with 1500 and hope that the colour matches. I really don't want to repaint that as it will harder to do blend as there's no natural break line along the side. Fingers crossed.

Final bit to repaint is the fill panel... it's bulged out on the driver side from me doing body work on it off the car, so got the shape wrong. So will need to sand that with 80 grit to shape it, then work back up through the grits.

Doing and all the sanding and prep in the evenings this week, so that i can do the colour on Saturday.

Then onto the dash, getting the glass, trim etc. in. Will it ever end?

Fuel pump is ~4inches lower than it was before. Tube is now pretty much level with the bottom of the tank:

So hard trying to catch the paint issue on camera, it doesn't show up in normal pics so had to try and do some camera trickery. It's a lot more obvious than in the pics, you can see it from several feet away. Try moving your head above / below the screen if it's not visible. In the white scratched up bit (razor bladed out the runs) you can see a purple / black outline, kind of looks like a mountain line:

Thanks Stu! The welds are very young Jedi on some parts as it wouldn't get a good contact for some reason. When i took the system off to weld the top parts, it laid out nicely, so you get to see the rough welds and not the nice ones. Ah well, at least it's together! Got some new brackets through the post as i didn't have enough and some are quite rusted, so doing that tonight as well as sanding the top half of the door. Managed to procrastinate 2 nights in a row!

So the brackets i ordered were 2.5" but were too small, as i was using them on flanged ends of pipe. So they needed to be 67mm instead of 65mm. Annoying as a couple that i used before but are a bit rusty say 2.5" and fit fine

So gotta wait for the post, they should be here on Wednesday.

Sanded down the top half of the door with 600 then 800 to take the clear coat off, so it's ready for masking and paint now. Same with the front of the fender. Sanded down the trunk fill panel with 80 grit as it was quite out of shape, then 180, 240 and 320, so it's ready for primer. There's a chip on the front bumper from where a grinding disc fell on it, so sanded that back and filled. Sanded smooth the edge of the part of the rocker panel that i left masking tape on.

Now it's time to clean up the areas for paint and mask everything up. Once the paint is on then i can fit the windows, seals, and whatever else is needed to make it done.

This is a good visual of what happens when i'm in the garage:

Looking good!

Paint is a nightmare, I hope I never have to paint another car as long as I live - I feel your pain!

Keep up the great work.

It's like constant firefighting.

I was primering yesterday and found a little technique for filling pinholes if any show themselves. I reduced the air inlet so that almost no air was coming through, then it lets out little droplets of paint that you can drop over the pinholes. Works easier on flat panels of course. I thought better that, then sanding and repriming, waiting etc.

So today i'm sanding down the trunk fill panel and the other patch bits i.e the front bumper chip, then putting some red and clear on. Hopefully done by lunchtime, then i can finish the dash paint whilst everything is masked off. Then trim can go in, then side glass, battery is here, so i can do the wiring and get it started
