Recently my engine light came on, what i have noticed is that usually after a few mins if i put my hand on the bonnet the heat from the engine can be felt through the bonnet or after a drive, since the light has come on the bonnet is freezing cold, if i open the bonnet the engine is slighty warm, but not as hot as it used to be before the light came on

Sounds like an electrical fault here - to do with the water. Not knowing much at all about 5th gens and just using a bit of logic and what you've described, sounds like the water temp sensor / ecu picking up the water temp has an issue. maybe the sensor itself or just a connection. sounds like the water is constantly pumping around, which is why it's a lot cooler? maybe the water pump is stuck to "on"? that's my first thoughts, maybe ties in with your symptons?

Hi I also am not familiar with Gen5s,so whats the temp gauge show has it changed noticeably my 1st sus would be the thermostat stuck open if its not getting to regular temp the suggestion that the water pump is stuck on could only apply to an electric pump so if its belt driven that out of the equasion ! but as their trying to save the planet by substituting a £15 throttle cable with up to 800quids worth of throw away blackmagic boxes many of us are gonna be struggling!not to mention the plastic encasement/trim on top of most new cars !I know a variable flow electric pump is a possibility so a valid suggestion if on the car in question. If you can,t sus it ,take it to a RECOMENDED vehicle diagnostic technition who will have been in at the begining IE since the early eighties there,no shortage of clowns out there now and remember there,s still no computer that FIXES cars good mechanics do the fixing but only when the fault manifests itself during diagnostic hookup Hope some of this helps Rockinfox 88 Iroc z

Just another thought 78camaro may be pointing you in the right direction a duff or failing sensor could be leaving the rad fans on,road speed also enters this equasion good luck Rockinfox

Where are you based mate? I have efilive so can scan the codes for you. Is the car stock under the bonnet? Does it go into limp mode, or just throw a code?
If it doesnt go into limp mode, then its usually not a major issue. But its worth scanning it to check. If you have aftermarket exhaust etc then its likely the O2 sensors complaining. Thats the most common problem. Also check the throttle connection its a bit loose at the best of times, so if you have been cleaning or a new intake etc it might not be making a sound connection.

As above there is nothing magic about the late models. They just use sensors for feedback to the ECU and if one doesnt act as GM expect it can throw a code. This is virtually guaranteed if its been modified from stock. The person doing the mods would normally tune out the variation so as to not throw a code, but its not unusual for this not to have been done, or at least not done properly :)

The scan tools are a pretty reasonable tool to add to the toolbox with the late model cars.
