Since a classic Camaro would be a toy to have fun with I'd have to say a manual would be my preference. If I was commuting in traffic everyday then of course an auto would quickly have benefits.

I think most peoples' choices are made for them when they buy their car. It's not so important either way for most owners so the original system gets left in.

Manual nearly everytime. Except big 4x4s.

I've had both and the Auto's are a lot easier and nicer to drive and the car chooses the correct gears but the manual gets a lot better fuel consumption as normally has more gears than an auto. The manuals have that better control. The manuals from my experience run at 1000rpm lower when cruising say at 80.

With the auto's, they kick down when they should but sometimes when in a manual I was never sure at what speed I could correctly use 1st gear and 1st gear can go a long way....I believe the new corvette can do 60 mph in 1st... Do you put it in 1st if doing 30mph and need the power?

I tend to find auto's also need some warming up before they come smooth and will only drop down properly once warm.

Auto's means reving at the traffic lights to tempt the M3 a bit more difficult when you are in N and then have to shift into D when the lights go green and you have to wait for the revs to drop...hehehe

But I can live with both.

Manual gearbox allows full driver control, more fun, better economy if sensibly driven.
Automatics are good in town traffic and if upgraded better for drag race competition.
I prefer manuals but modern overdrive gearboxes like GM 700r4 offer good cruising and excellent gas milage, I used to own 2 C4 Corvettes with these overdrive automatics and the fuel saving compared to a th350 or even worse a Powerglide is fantastic!
