The time has come, new sales of diesel and petrol cars are being banned in 2040. Only sales of all electric and hybrid (pointless) cars will take place. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40723581 https://uk.news.yahoo.com/petrol-diesel ... 00850.html |

Slight tangent, all that lost tax revenue, how will the government of the day get that back? I'm guessing massive hikes to electricity prices, that's if enough electricity can be generated to supply houses and cars

They will certainly lose out on a lot of tax revenue. My first guesses are that they will bring back road tax in the spirit of paying for roads and related activity (whereas currently it's based on emissions). They will probably increase tax slowly on car purchases and maybe add a fee for transfer of car ownership (stealth admin tax). Petrol stations will probably provide electric charging and there will be a charge for topping up, on which there will be a tax. Maybe they even bring in additional taxes that we've not heard of before related to owning / driving a car. Maybe they will go as far as raising income tax across the board? Also, how will people charge their cars in cases where they live in flats and / or park on the street. I doubt it will be possible to line every street with charging points at every parking spot. |

Imagine sparks flying at a petrol station! One of those damn quiet things nearly ran into the back of the wife and I, didn't hear it behind us |

Electric cars have a place, more in smaller vehicles, short distance urban use.. but the technology is still decades away from long distance use, proper long life rechargeability and weight. What about all other diesel engine use in generators, ships, trains, etc.. and aviation etc.. |

I'm old enough to remember a list of predictions from so called "experts" about how the future was going to be ... We were supposed to have energy that was cheap and almost limitless thanks to proposed fusion reactors . We were supposed to be moving towards a new Ice Age . By now we are all meant to be working a 10 hour week thanks to automation . We should also have a moon colony for minerals and space travel ... Well those experts got all of that right Won't be holding my breath for these new predictions ... call me back in 2040 and tell me how it went |

I remember an old text book from school that mentioned predictions of oil running out in 2040 Think it's been revised to 2060 / 70 as of several years ago. The efforts should be better placed into government sector schemes i.e. electrifying buses (there's a company that makes electric buses already - they look just the same as normal buses and charge at bus stops with what look like large street lights that sit just a few inches above the bus roof. They wirelessly charge at every bus stop and tests have shown they can run 24/7 365 without needing to go into a depot for servicing for extended periods. Brake fade is minimal due to regen braking so it's mainly just tyre changes). Taxi's should also all be electric as they also spend 95% of their time sat in cities and idling around and can easily charge up at taxi ranks. Goodness help us if local councils have to come up with ideas. They'll just setup some fax machines and employ a load of untrained admin people to deal with fines for a load of bizarre rules they come up with, that inadvertently end up creating more traffic and pollution. |

I doubt very much theresa may will be in power in 2040 to enforce the change so like most tory promises it will never happen, it'll appease the crusty hippies for the time being though |

Here's a slight deviation, what about heating oil? We live in a rural area and use this way of heating our home and water
