Nobody seems to know the answer to this question.

I've thrown a 305 V8 in my 2nd gen which was a 229 V6. I need to send off the v5 document with the new engine details but I am unsure which engine number to use. There are two sets of numbers to the top left of the water pump just in front of the passenger cylinder head. There is the engine code (example) "V0112CLJ" then underneath that is last 9 characters of the VIN (example) "13N132794". There is also the casting number on the back by the bell housing (example) "3970010". All the numbers are in the same locations and of the same format on both engines. I just don't know what to put on my v5 document. The partial VIN, the engine code with the suffix or the casting number. I looked on my V5 to see what format the number is in the "engine number" section so I could find the appropriate one on the V8 but the number on the V5 doc is (example) "801-9947323". I can't see anything of that format on either engines. What kind of number does everyone else have on their V5 doc's for SBC's?

I didn't have a chance to look at my engine over the weekend but i'm 99% sure that DVLA will be interested in partial VIN. The other casting numbers etc. aren't unique enough to make it worthwhile noting them down. The reason they would need to know, is to ensure that they engine size is correct (so that it's registered accordingly for emissions etc.) and the other reason would be for dodgy / stolen / swaps etc. The only way they could deal with the latter is by seeing if the partial vin is matched up to the vin on the cowel. Hope it helps!! I wouldn't rely completely on what someone else put down on a registration document - some Camaro's and other GM cars are registered as GMC, probably because they intended to put GM and someone at DVLA couldn't match it on the system so just put what was there, GMC. Never know!

I've got 2 second gen Camaro V5's in front of me.

One has engine number as :N then a 6 digit number
The other has engine number as: Q then an 11 digit number

Mine starts with GM! It seems people just put down anything by the looks of it. Mine does have an incorrect CC on there, so i'll update it at some point and will use the code with the partial vin in it, innit.
