What are some good ways / chemicals to use to clean wheels that have seen better days? Forgot to take a pic of the inside which is basically black, but the insides are building up corrosion (aluminium alloy):

That nasty foamy oven cleaner stuff.....s´what I use. Not on the wheel face though. |

I use Meguiars wheel brightener, its acid. For the inside, don't worry about it... just wire brush the corrosion off and leave it... |

Thanks! I have some oven cleaner that i'll use for the inside (as in, the side facing into the car). I'll use a wire brush then for the inside (where the tyre mounts onto). For the public facing side, i'll give Meguiars a try. There are a lot of brands out there and didn't want to waste money on what a lot of the time is just a rebranded and up-priced mr.muscle all purpose cleaner. I came across iron x stuff in my search which is apparently good for wheels that have been neglected and helps remove the stubborn deposits that are stuck on well. |

Wonder Wheels Super Alloy Wheel Cleaner - eats up carbon desposits very well - its the strongest wheel cleaner I've used and works much better than the Valet PRO Bilberry Wheel Cleaner which seems popular these days [bought my dad a bottle of that recently but dont think id buy another compared to wonder wheels] CarPro - Iron X - eats up iron deposits very well. I had a rear brake caliber seize up on my work car and by the time a replacement came the alloy was properly caked in what looked like iron filings, to the point i thought it'd need a respray. Gave this a blast and came up like new. Use both, and rinse well between and afterwards. Aside from physical damage they will leave your wheels like new. Also stick some sort of wheel sealer or wax on afterwards, or brake dust and dirt will stick to them like turd to a blanket. |

Thanks Lee, much appreciated! I'm sort of new to the detailing side of things, i understand the process and theory, but the confusing part is choosing the products. I've just been used to non-cheap but run of the mill car shampoos and waxes. Unfortunately when you want to break out of that mold, you open up a world of products and many of them for lack of a better word are gimmicks and rely on the placebo effect. With the prices of some things i've seen, don't fancy finding out the hard way what works and doesn't! |
