My guess on detonation is when there is too much compression causing the mixture to ignite before the spark has a chance to ignite. Not heard of pinking, so looking forward to hearing about what that is...

Detonation and pinking are the same thing
The two main reasons for pinking/detonation are ignition timing and hot spots that can form on the cylinder head and valve bottoms due to carbon build up which we dont really see much of these days due to ever changing designs but go back to pre unleaded days you may have heard the saying its coaked up ??
we used to take the heads off valves out and wire drill the carbon off every thing
Kinda miss the old days
