http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23713732 I'm a supporter of the anti middle hogging law, but both of these need definitions. What is classed as tail gaiting? What's the distance supposed to be? What are drivers being provided with in order to maintain distance and comply? Same for lane hogging, how long are you in the middle lane for it to be classed as lane hogging? When is it lane hogging vs. anticipating the next move? What if you are being pre-cautious, therefore being open to perception i.e heavy rainfall = possible aqua planing on the left most lane, etc. etc. BBC didn't do a great job at reporting on this one. |

And don't forget: "Wheel-spins, handbrake turns and other careless manoeuvres". So that's £100 fine and three points if you get caught doing a burnout, then! |

It's a bit of flimsy law isn't it. "Being in the wrong lane and pushing into a queue on a roundabout". I'm sorry but what are you supposed to do. I sometimes have to do this because i was in the WRONG lane. How many times do you drive down the road and realise that suddenly the lane you're in turns into a left only - we don't all stay and drive in the town we live in, some of us venture out into what for us in unchartered territory. The more i read about this, the more of a f*k up it is. Obviously, what will happen is when someone makes a genuine mistake, they will get fines and points, but when someone acts like a d*ck and cuts people up etc, they will get away scot free. What they should do, is rewrite this law and just call it the 'don't be a d*ck on the road' act. If you can't be bothered to wait until the roundabout to turn around and pull a handbrake u-turn when there's traffic on both sides... that's a d*ck move and you should get pulled over. If you're trying to get into the correct lane, then that's not exactly going to cause cars to flip over and catch fire and re-create a scene from a Grand Theft Auto game. This post probably belongs in the rant section lol. Good thing about the phone thing though, i saw just the other day a guy towing a car while on his phone |

It's all fairly pointless as there just aren't enough police on the roads to actually stop anyone for these new 'offences'. The only possibility is the use of existing traffic cameras to monitor and subsequently charge people, but then it comes down to the discretion and eagle-eyed nature of the camera operators, whoever they may be., |

I agree with Chevy-stu, police just aren't out there patrolling any more, so it ain't going to happen. Plus, the point of this was to stop it all having to go through the courts but anyone can dispute the offence and have it go to court anyway. I see many people on mobiles while driving, it's been illegal for years but again, no police about to catch them so...... Cheers, Martin |
