I could be wrong but have a suspicion that Pontiac were trying to pull the wool over the SCCA's eyes by claiming that Canadian Firebirds (hence the different front) were sold with SBC's as I believe some other Pontiacs were eg- Parisiennes had SBC's. The Firebirds in TransAm were completely illegal. But who cares now? It was some of the best racing ever seen so rejoice! It would be great to see more Camaro (and Firebird) owners out racing their cars, Number 55 here races his '69 RS and there is room for more, so bring 'em out! Cheers, Martin |

Interesting info there Sportsroof. I don't know much more than the basics about original Trans Am racing, but I did know alot of tricks were going on to comply with regs... (the acid dipping/weight scandal with the Penske Cmaros springs to mind) |

Sorry guy's I may be way off here but I thought that Pontiac used Camaro's with retro fitted front ends, due to budget limitations. Still look good. Was it Smokey Yunik's that had fuel in the roll cage, Acid dipped, de-railed and Wind Shield profile changed (Genius). Cheers Roger |

Oh, Smokey's Camaro had a bit more than that going on, as did many others. Yes, he was good at 'interpreting' rules his own way (cheating) but that's racing. Was then, still is now IMHO. Smokey thought outside the box compared to many and that's what you need to do in racing where the rules are restrictive (aren't they all?). I call it Stealth Bombing, the gentlemanly art of gaining an advantage over the opposition while appearing to be nothing special. Heh Heh. Cheers, Martin |
