Ye, it's a bit to do with how registrations work and the amount of spam.

Before, registrations were not open... you would have to have an email sent to an admin who then activates the account. I was getting 100+ emails to my personal inbox each day. Go away for a weekend and well, pages of new registrations and you'd have to go through each one to see if there was a real person there. Quite a heavy task and it also meant that a real user could get missed (because we could only go by username to judge spam vs fake). Also, a real user would have to wait a few days in order to post, which could turn people away. Therefore, Nige and i worked on several versions of registrations that allowed people to access and write on the forum, but stop spammers. That's why we have the "new users post here" thread, as now, we only get maybe 1 spam posting a month. It also means we can tell who's real and who's not very easily. The ONLY downside therefore is that spammers / spambots can register, but not activate. That means no spam posts (only admins see them if and when they pop up) visibly on the board, but the names do appear on the user list. It's a bit of a flaw / design issue within the software... it should only count active users as those who have been activated, but for some reason it counts registered users, therefore they show up in the user list. It's a minor thing that i hope to get around. In the meantime i usually clean the user lists so you see less than 500 or so users. Haven't had the time to clean the lists and the software doesn't provide an ideal way of cleaning, it's hard to do bulk lists as you can't seperate real users, so can be time consuming to get rid of 100 or so. We usually get 30-40 spam registrations per day. A big improvement, but it's the best balance we've found so far between user experience and time.

Hope it helps, hoping that newer versions will include some updates. It's a big thing with forums, so they tend to get better with each version, giving better tools to deal with it.

Cheers,

Ray

How to post pics: When writing a message, scroll down and use the "attach file" option. Where possible, a photo sharing service can be used such as Flickr, Imgur etc. The image location (usually ending in .jpg) can be copy and pasted between the ][ brackets that appear when you click the 'Img' button (you can find this button at the top of the message box).

How to post youtube vids: Click on the 'youtubeHD' button at the top of the message box and in the middle of the ][ brackets that just appeared, copy and paste everything from the youtube web address that appears after the = sign i.e if this is the url: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2cNqaPSHv0 just copy "K2cNqaPSHv0").

I´ve been on http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/ since 2003 and you get the feel for a spammer´s screen name or/and location.
