"On this date in 2005, John DeLorean passed away at the age of 80. DeLorean, an innovative industry executive and founder of the motor company that bore his name, worked his way up through the auto industry, first as an engineer at the Packard Motor Company and then at General Motors where he was credited with having developed the GTO.

The ensuing years saw DeLorean rise through the ranks of General Motors, quickly becoming the youngest general manager of the Pontiac division and then the youngest head of Chevrolet. In 1973 he left General Motors to found the DeLorean Motor Company. It was not until 1981, however, that his company produced the iconic DMC-12 in Dunmurry, Ireland. The company ran into financial troubles soon thereafter and DeLorean was arrested on charges of drug trafficking. The Dunmurry plant was closed in October of 1982.

The car bearing his name, however, has continued to live on in the annals of popular culture thanks to its more than memorable appearance as a time machine in the Back To The Future film series."

He was a good guy in his early years during the glory days of Detroit and the muscle car wars.
More of a maverick than a 'company man', GM found him hard to tame.
He was a real car guy and even tried to produce a 2seat Pontiac very similar to the vette !
GM were not having any of it , and the rest is history...

Some brilliant books by him/about him
try "on a clear day you can see General Motors"

I served in Andersons' Town/ Dunmurry in Belfast right around the DMC factory at the time - my patrol route was right there in 79 in the middle of the "troubles" and have always closely followed the story ever since.

I also have the post set-up/jail book- can't find it since reorganistion of my book shelves here!)
