Post subject:  What Ultimate realistic car ?

I've had my Camaro just over 9 years now, and have spent a fortune on all the track upgrades, 2 new engines, 2 gearboxes (+ 1 rebuild) respray, and just generally keeping it going, and doing the sums not long ago the total was frightening, at least it was over a long period.

I've always had a hankering after a decent GT40 replica, and with money I've spent on mine over the years I could have bought one with a few grand on top. There's lots of amazing cars around for this money that will hold their value and give huge thrills whilst being possible to live with, another springs to mind is the Ultima GTR, have a couple of friends with these and they are astonishing. A decent TVR (Tuscan or Cerbera) would be less money but more maintainence in the long run. A track prepp'd C3 Corvette was another thought. I think I'm gonna work towards my GT40 goal at some point.

Anyone else have any other 'realistic' dream car aspirations ??

Very interesting topic you raise!

I was actually thinking about what kind of car would eventually replace my clio, which made me realise it was quite a challenge strangely.

I'm torn between safety and bad-assness. Have been in 3 nasty accidents - one where i was a passenger in a Supra that was going too fast around a bend and we bounced off several trees, another where a van driver thought it was ok to drive on the wrong side of the road, which was a nice surprise when coming around bend to quickly find our engines touching :wtf: . Another where a van driver decided he wouldnt stop at the red light which i was already stopped at. So ive come to really appreciate modern safety, but if it weren't for that, it would definitely be a muscle car hands down. For every day use i would probably have to retro mod it to make it friendly, i.e aircondition (which luckily most of them have), maybe a modern engine to help on the MPG's, good brakes, liveable exhaust volume etc.

I think (at the moment) that i would probably be much happier living with a muscle car that has been modernised and spend the extra $ on it, than have a modern sports car like a Ferrari - (saw a 360 the other day for £49,995, not far off the cost of a new Camaro, or a mint 1st gen / early 2nd gen)!

Ultimate realistic car? Oh man . I dunno. What's realistic to one man is another mans pipe dream.

For me its a last of the line 4th Gen SS. I think. OR if I went down the finance or bank loan route I could move up a level. A nice 67? Still don't know

Always comes down to 2 door coupes with V8 power and a good interior for me .
In the past have considered the BMW 840 with the later larger 4.4 engine ,or the Jag XK8 or the supercharged XKR.
The downfall of these cars is that they are complicated and become money pits if anything serious goes wrong and in most cases it will be electronic gremlins that even main dealers seem to find impossible to trace...
I will continue to resist temptation and stay with muscle cars that are fixable with an average toolkit and have sensible prices for most parts.

Totally agree there, I'd have a '69 Firebird to keep my '69 Camaro comapny. I just had soooo much fun with my old '69 'Bird.

Stu,I too like the GT40 idea & would like to build one if I'm honest, but i couldn't just build it as most are, it would have to be an identical replica, even down to some faded paint & battle scars. If you looked ta it, it would have to be impossible to distinguish it from a real one PERIOD!!! Performance wise it'd have to be set up for racing, but be street legal. I'd want somewhere in the region of 550 plus HP, but EVERYTHING would have to be period correct.

cheers..Nige

I do like those AM's - have the muscle car look about them :) There was one that drove near my area about 10 years ago - me and my mate were working on his car in his drive way and we ran to my car and tried to catch up with it to get a better view :)
