Please take the time to read though this, although there's a lot of bullshit opinions & chest puffers replying, it really could affect the way we modify cars. http://www.rodsnsods.co.uk/forum/topic/ ... ions-64112 If this becomes legislation it WILL affect all of us!! Please don't shoot the messenger, I've posted this to make you aware of what MIGHT happen, fore warned is fore armed etc etc Nige |

Good god. None of set out with the intention of making the car worse than it was when it left the factory. Most of us (if not preserving the vehicle exactly as it came off the line) want to make the things brake better, handle better and perform better. Of course, there's degrees of success in those - but none of us set out to build a car that's unsafe. |

Here's a link to the ACE site that outlines the proposals. http://www.the-ace.org.uk/armageddon/ It would seem that if this proposal goes through then any form of modifying will be outlawed. The proposals are due to go to parliament in SIX WEEKS !!. if unopposed they WILL become law. For those of us with a historic vehicle I find this bit worrying QUOTE:- So Historic vehicles won’t have to worry? Within the UK we have a system that allows alterations to ANY, including Historic, vehicles whilst still allowing them to retain their identity. Known commonly as the 8 point system and also we have the ability to change body appearance on chassis based vehicles. However the ‘proposal’ contains a NEW EU wide Historic vehicle definition. “(7) ‘vehicle of historic interest’ means any vehicle which fulfils all the following conditions : It was manufactured at least 30 years ago, It is maintained by use of replacement parts which reproduce the historic components of the vehicle; It has not sustained any change in the technical characteristics of its main components such as engine, brakes, steering or suspension and It has not been changed in its appearance;" When they say "It is maintained by use of replacement parts which reproduce the historic components of the vehicle;", they are saying that it has to be maintained using "factory specification parts", which are "approved" by the manufacturer. So, there will be no change of engine make/size from that which the car came with, no alloy wheels unless that car came with them & then it would have to run OE wheels, no brake upgrades, steering, no suspension changes, no aftermarket exhausts systems, no exhaust headers, & no body modifications. There has been talk that there were discussions on whether or not a historic vehicle should also be painted in a factory colour only. Every part of the car should use OE (original equipment) parts. These proposals are for ALL cars, not just historic. They are even changing the laws regarding trailers. Here's a link to a thread that ran on here some time ago with some more details. At this point it was thought that it would "never happen", now it's going to go through parliament in six weeks if it can't be stopped. http://www.classiccamaroclubuk.com/phpB ... f=1&t=1715 Don't shoot the messenger, but read ALL of the info to be aware of what's going on cheers...Nige |

Tried to contact them on the ACE site, but it won't let me for some reason... I'm thinking of emailing/writing to local MP, Euro MP and DFT.. This would totally screw me and my car falls slap bang in the middle of all the restrictions. Over 30 years old, modified everything !!!! |

Can't see this happening, think of all the businesses that would cease to exist if they couldn't sell aftermarket parts + nearly every car on the road over 10 years old has something that isn't standard fitted to it. Be it a exhaust or some alloy wheels. Who makes up these stupid ideas? Should be shot. They want us to live a uniform world where we all drive the same euro boxes, pay our taxes don't ask questions. Well they can piss off! Rant over, lol. Can't imagine my local MOT bloke taking that much notice of it either, I'm sure he'd tick the it's all standard box for me! |

I just sent this email to my local MP, and all the London MEP's email adress's I could find.. Feel free to copy and do it too (obviously changing vehicle details as required) Dear XXXXXX ref: FIVA re-classification of historic vehicles / Charter of Turin I am very worried and quite disgusted at the threat to the modified and historic vehicle world that could be experienced this year if the FIVA recommendations are passed through. We have possibly the world's most impressive history of motorsports and modified vehicles here in the UK, spanning across all areas of vehicle engineering, and the specialist vehicle industry is worth billions which would all be lost if this legislation goes through the EU decision makers. Some European counties do not have our thriving modified and historic vehicle industry, so it would not impact them to the same extent it would in the UK, so these changes to historic vehicle classification are not fair and relevant to British registered vehicles. I run a modified 1977 Chevrolet Camaro, which whilst being street legal and MOT'd, insured, and VED, it has a modified engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, strengthened chassis, roll cage, interior. I use it for pleasure driving trips all over the country & Europe. I also use it for track days to improve my driving abilities, and for charity days to help raise revenue for various childrens cancer charities. The standard vehicle was designed 40 years ago and many of the modifications make it safer by adding better and more modern designed components. For example larger 13" brakes will stop the vehicle quicker and more safely than the original 10.75" system. The newer seats and 4 point harness hold the driver and passenger in position far more safely than the poor designed originals. The strengthening of the chassis and roll cage makes the car stronger and safer in the unlikely case of an accident, and along with improved suspension parts, far more stable and more predictable to drive. I would ask you to please help to try and make sure this historic vehicle re-classification doesn't effect the modified vehicle industry in this country, before this goes through in the next few weeks. Yours sincerely, XXXXXX |

Sorry but you need to get your head out of the sand, this IS going to government in SIX WEEKS!! if not opposed it WILL become law, no ifs, no buts! As to your local MOT bloke, he will be governed by VOSA & would lose his license or job IF he were to just pass cars that don't conform. The thing to think about is that the insurance companies will also have a say in what cars they will or won't insure. I can't see them insuring a non compliant car can you?? As to the loss of businesses, they closed all of the coal mines, steel works etc & didn't bat an eyelid Remember the scrapage scheme?? that was brought about to remove old cars from the roads, this is another method of doing that, but without the government spending £2000 per car for the privelege. They want us to drive eco friendly cars & not noisy old gas guzzlers Obviously, you're entitled to your opinions & I respect that, but this has been rumbling on for a while now, with people saying it won't happen yada yada yada,........In six weeks time we might not have an option anymore. I'm just the messenger & don't agree with it at all, but we ALL need to be aware of what's going on. Only then can we make a judgement as to what needs to be done. Nige |

Post subject: | Re: legislation update POSSIBLE CAR MODIFYING TO BE BANNED !!! |
I love the intention to decrease road casulties to Zero, made me laugh ....I'm being serious here......modified vehicles do not magically make them worse or more unsafe than a standard car. I agree there should be some roadworthiness test, such as an MOT for older vehicles but with COMMON sence fails, ie the tire is bald = fail, doesnt have an airbag = pass (it didnt when it was made.... duh...) Why would anything NONE standard, unless of inferior quality, not be allowed? If an MOT tester finds a drive shaft made from chocolate, then it is a fail, he replaces it with another part, maybe an uprated stronger one.....does it now fail cause it a modified car...dont be stupid??? As Dunc said, basically we are all suppose to buy a new car every 3 years and they are all suppose to be hybrid rubbish to be more economical and environmentally friendly. However, over the life time of a particular hybrid car the batteries have been shipped all over the world, and made using nasty, hard to dispose of chemicals, and are run on electric made from....wait for it....burning oil and coal. Its fact that extracting energy from a particualr source to another is more efficeint with less processes in between. Over all more efficeint to make a good fuel engine to run on petrol directly from oil and have it be made well or modifed to be better and last 30+ years .... than making batteries (using oil in the process for energy) then shipping them (using planes or ships - using oil...) and then using oil again... to make electric to charge the batteries which will be kaput after 3 years of use.... and then you buy a new car. sorry for the rant heheh |

Am I missing the point, I've read the legislation and NO WHERE is a mention of modified vehicles. It say there must be a common standard of testing, but nowhere it says a car must be standard, other than having to pass a test that is set for a standard vehicle IF it is modified. Yes, now historic vehicles WILL have to be MOT'ed IF Modified, but is this not a good thing??? They will be tested to a standard REPRESENTATIVE of the year of manufacter, I cant see an issue with this, TBH i wouldn't get in a car I knew wasnt road worthy anyway ?? |
