wow that's awesome, when i got some cash i want to do my own 1st or 2nd gen. We'll see how much I have after selling the MG.

Nige, you mention flatting it down, sorry if i sound dumb but you mean the paint? How long after painting can you flat down, someone told me the paint sets too hard to flat?? I sprayed my MG when i did its restoration about 6 months back and want to flat it now due to some runs ( i couldn't do it cause i was away in spain) can i still flat it with some 1800/2000 wet+dry then compound and polish??

Normally if a car's baked in an oven then it has a limited time frame to which you can "easily"
flat down & polish. Normally when you paint a car it'll only have 2-3 top coats applied, I put around 5-6 coats on the Camaro & because it was left to air dry as opposed to being baked it's still relatively soft, relative being the operative word. I've already flatted the paintwork down once with 1500 & some 2000, but that was a while ago.( I showed some of this on the cars build thread in the "projects" section, flatting & polishing the bootlid) I'm now going to flat out some bits that i'm not 100% happy with, with 2000 grit & then cut it back.

I'm not going for an all out 100% concours show paint finish as that's not what this car is about, this car is built to be used. I'm aiming for a 90% standard, as I don't want to have to worry about it getting small swirl marks through polishing or hairline scratches in the finish that you'd get through everyday use. Perfect paint finishes show up everything & to my mind look worse for a little wear & tear than a car with a lesser standard cut/polish does.

In saying that, friends have questioned why I'm even bothering to cut & flat out some bits as to them it looks good as it is, but I guess I get a bit analy retentive on some things.

With your car, pick an area that's not important & rub it down with some 2000 & then cut it back. if it polishes up ok I'd then try somewhere else, if you feel happy that it'll cut back ok I'd then do the parts that you feel need doing hth,

thanks Nige, well it hasn't been baked and its had about 3 coats as i remember, the paint job isn't too bad but there are a few runs where I built it up too much. Its my first paint job i have done on a car (other was landrover so it didn't matter if it wasn't perfect) but the midget had a run on one side front and rear arch (thats what you get painting in your garage from a piddly compressor and stuck up spray gun and some paint that you were told is ok, to then get to the bottom and find it had half hardened and has a big lump in, i hate buying peoples half assed projects )

anyways, ill have a go at the flatting on the sill or something, see how it goes

My 11 year old son thinks you must be a god after seeing those pictures.

My 8 year old daughter just added "...weed killer (for dad)" to the shopping list.

I think I need to do some image building with them lol.

Mind you my son wants a go at driving my Gen 4..... if his feet will reach the pedals its Tesco car park in the early hours :-)
