Couple of thoughts based on previous comments: I have been circuit racing for 13 years now, and in that time have visited a few gravel traps and the odd barrier (oops) but they were all my own fault and did not involve any other cars. Also no other car has collided with mine. Before racing, I did 5 years of Sprinting, which for those who don't know, is you in your car against the clock doing a standing start lap around a racetrack or circuit laid on on an airfield or similar large space. I had one or two 'offs' but only damaged the car once. Before that I wasted 12 years drag racing but that's not even worth mentioning really. Too much money and hanging around for far too little time on track.
As for track days, I have been to a couple (not taken part) and driving standards were below bad. Comical in fact with many crashes. Driving on the public road is not without risks either, as I'm sure most here will have a story or two about that!
On balance, racing is the safest as we all pass an ARDS test before getting a licence, plus we all really want to do it in the first place or we wouldn't be there. Most are competent drivers who respect each other's cars and don't take stupid risks usually but it does depend on which club you choose to race with.
Yes, damage is possible when racing but it's far less risky than most think. How do you think I felt driving to my first race at 4:00 am in the pouring rain?
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea
BUT I
am sure it is the best fun you can have with your clothes on!
Cheers, Martin
